In 2014-2015, pangasius exports to Mexico were quiet and reported negative growth in several months. From March 2016 upto now, pangasius exports to the market have been more stable and have reported good growth.
According to ITC statistics, pangasius and Chinese tilapia are currently competing in Mexico. In 2016, frozen tilapia imports (HS 030461) into Mexico from China remained good: 14% over the previous year. However, imports of frozen pangasius fillets have decreased by 19% compared to 2015.
Since 2012, tilapia products from Vietnam have also begun to compete strongly with Chinese tilapia in Mexico with better price.
Demand for importing tilapia is forecasted to stabilize in the time to come, while imports of pangasius are forecast to increase gradually in Mexico market. Therefore, in the coming time, in addition to boosting tilapia export to this market, Vietnam pangasius businesses can increase their market share of pangasius to Latin America, including Mexico.
