EU’s Vietnamese tuna imports increased

Vietnamese frozen tuna loin exports to the European Union (EU) grew by 11.8 per cent year on year, reaching USD 15.7 million up to 15 February 2015, reported Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters & Producers (VASEP).
Update: (3/24/2015)

The association also informed that there was also an increase in canned tuna exports to the EU, by 84 per cent year on year while live, fresh, frozen and dried tuna saw the strongest growth at 7.7 per cent from the same period in 2014.

VASEP stressed that among EU nations, Germany, Spain and Italy were the largest import markets of Vietnamese tuna. While imports of Germany and Spain rose, those of Italy decreased.

According to the association, tuna exports to Spain represent 67 per cent of EU’s total exports of the species. Until early February 2015, Vietnam earned USD 2.6 million from tuna exports to this EU country (125 per cent increase).

VASEP remarked that among the three largest importing markets of tuna from Vietnam, Germany has become the biggest market, from which up to 15 February Vietnam earned USD 5.6 million, representing a 63.7 per cent growth year on year.

VASEP added that other tuna exports into the EU come from Thailand and Ecuador, the latter, being tax exempted, is the largest supplier of semi-processed tuna loins to tuna processing plants in Spain.

Market experts have forecast that if the euro continues to depreciate, tuna consumption in the EU will decrease, causing canned tuna imports to decline.
