VIETNAM CEPHALOPOD EXPORTS TO AUSTRALIA WENT UP

According to Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports in the first 7 months of this year totaled US$2.55 million, up 29.1% compared to the same period in 2015. Of these, despite a small proportion of 1.2%, cephalopod exports from Vietnam to Australia recorded a good growth compared to main importers of Vietnam. In July 2016, exports to this market reached US$447 thousand, up 31.2% over the same period in 2015.

In the first half of this year, Australia increased imports of cephalopod from other countries, mainly from China, followed by Malaysia and Thailand. The country mainly imported frozen squid, followed by processed squid and frozen octopus.

The average import price of frozen squid into Australia in the first 6 months of this year ranged from US$3.78 to US$$4.14 per kilo. The average export price of Vietnam’s frozen squid to Australia quoted at a high level compared with top 3 major suppliers to this market.

Vietnam was among top 3 suppliers of processed squid to Australia. The export price of Vietnam’s processed squid to this market were higher than the other two leading suppliers to Australia and the average import prices into Australia. However, processed squid from Vietnam is favoured by Australian customers thanks to high quality and food safety and hygiene.

Australia’s cephalopod exports in the first half of this year were on the downward trend. The U.S was the largest importer of Australian cephalopod, followed by Canada and China.
