Vietnam has helped Venezuela develop aquaculture and rice cultivation

On October 2, 2018, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh had a meeting with Mr. Jorge Rondón Uzcátegui - Ambassador of Venezuela to Vietnam and a mission of Venezuelan Ministry of Agriculture and Land.

In 2015, the Government of Venezuela signed the Agreement on Agricultural Cooperation with the Government of Vietnam. The two sides have jointly implemented the projects “Cooperative development of rice production in Venezuela” and “Development of aquaculture in Venezuela”. In 2017, experts from the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VASS) came to Venezuela to support state-owned farms to transfer and develop advanced rice cultivation techniques to increase productivity, reduce costs and improve economic efficiency.

Mr Jorge Rondón Uzcátegui said that Vietnam has helped Venezuela develop aquaculture and rice cultivation which are priority areas in its food security policy. The initial results of the two projects are due to the efforts of both countries. However, the implementation of the two projects has encountered several difficulties as follows: Agricultural production as well as other production sectors of the Venezuelan economy are in difficulty, inflation has increased, directly affecting the living conditions and working conditions of Vietnamese delegations; Venezuela's project participants are constantly changing so it is unclear what the project objectives and coordination mechanism should be, therefore sometimes they did not implement the projects in time; Venezuela's production equipment and tools are damaged with no spare parts, leading to limitation in production support.

Jorge Rondón Uzcátegui expressed his hope for the upcoming time, besides governmental agencies, enterprises will also participate in the implementation of cooperation projects between the two countries.

According to Vice Minister Le Quoc Doanh, Venezuela is a country with great potential for agricultural production. Meanwhile, Vietnam has strength in rice and and seafood production and exports. The agricultural cooperation projects between the two countries on rice and fisheries are implemented in a synchronized and effective way, helping Venezuela overcome the food shortage and ensuring food security. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is considering sending delegations to Venezuela to discuss plans to implement future agricultural cooperation projects.
